Giving Up Already?

And my buddy said something along the lines of…
“Let’s make the trip fun, it shouldn’t be all about Sa Calobra “

And he’s so damn right.
It can get just a bit too serious, a bit too obsessive.
It’s a climb. It’s a mountain climb. It’s a long, tough, hard climb and if I don’t get up it… And?

And that’s just it isn’t it? It’s not the failing to get up a climb, or actually getting up the climb.

It’s the meaning we attach to those things.

Mallorca is such a grand place for cycling.
The small backstreet villages, the rolling, sometimes sharp hill climbs.
The warmth, the sun.
All this could get lost in the quest for climbing up that one climb.

So trying to be aware if I am using this as an excuse for giving up on Sa Calobra without actually giving up, I feel I should turn this into the quest for fun on the cycle again.

How do I do that?
(Why are you always asking yourself such dumb questions ?)
How do I do that?
Just get on with it, and find out as you go along.
Make it up as you go along.
Stop and smile while you are out cycling.

It’s not about the times all the climbs…

It’s about the smiles, and the coffees, and the little cakes to keep you going along the way. It’s about being with my buddy.

All this focus on the percentages and the kilometers and the speed and the average watts, it’s all to try and confirm to yourself that you’re not falling apart. That it makes me somehow worthy. I don’t think it’s necessarily a feeling of unworthiness or worthiness in other people’s eyes, it’s my judgment of myself.

So today, I’m going to go on a cycle to rediscover the pleasure of just being out there.
The wind is easy, it’s cold and a bit grey.

But it’s a cycling day.
Get out there and enjoy it.

Stop and smile and enjoy the universe unfolding.

I want to have the joy.

Setting off soon.
It’s my first time out on a road bike in six months.
Joy. Joy. Joy

Both my knees are a bit sore a bit inflamed but let’s see what happens.
Nice and steady.
